The following is a summary of an Executive Summary of the Annual Industry Report prepared by Millennium Research Group and published in Implant Dentistry (Volume 9 / Number 3 / 2000).
The first thing that I noted from the report is that the Dental Implant industry is thriving and Nobel Biocare is leading the pack by far. Root form implants dominate the market in the range of about 96-97% of all implants. The report states that the general practitioner is the most untapped group of dentists in this industry and that virtually every implant manufacturer is courting this market most notably with single stage, fast integrating, easier systems. Currently about 10% of the dentists in the United States are using dental implants and growth is projected at 10%-15% per year. To date, the majority of implant users are specialists including Oral surgeons, periodontists, Implantologists and Prosthodontists. I find it very interesting that "Implantologists" have now been elevated, according to this report, to specialty status.
The dollar value of the US implant market is currently estimated at $243.3 million showing a growth rate this year of 16.4%. Growth is continued to escalate through the next five years at a compounded annual growth rate of 15.8% with annual sales reaching over half a billion dollars by 2005... That's a fairly health business.
The report finds much greater impetus to get dental implants siting public awareness, increased discretionary funds and the maturing of the baby boomer generation. It is estimated that there will be 910,000 dental implant procedures performed in the year 2000 and that these numbers will grow at an annual compounded rate of 18.6% through year 2005.
Nobel Biocare occupies 39% of the US market (up from 20% with the acquisition of Steri-Oss). 3-I occupies about 17.3% while Strauman, currently the fastest growing dental implant company in the US is at 11.2% of the total dental implant market. The remaining major dental implant companies include Paragon, Lifecore, Sulzer Calcitek and Bicon.
I strongly suggest that anyone interested in dental Implantology read the article in Implant dentistry.
